I Asked ChatGPT to Build These 7 Simple Tools

You Don’t Need Special Software to Create Useful Tools Anymore

For a long time, I assumed building software required expensive programs, development environments, and years of technical experience.

If I wanted a custom tool, I thought I needed to learn programming first.

Recently, I discovered something surprising.

With ChatGPT, a simple text editor, and a web browser, it’s possible to create useful mini applications in minutes.

No software installation.

No complex setup.

No coding background required.

All I needed was a simple idea and the ability to describe what I wanted.

The Simple Process

The workflow was much easier than I expected.

  1. Open a basic text editor such as Notepad.
  2. Ask ChatGPT to generate the code.
  3. Copy and paste the code into the text file.
  4. Save it as an HTML file.
  5. Open it in a web browser.

That’s it.

The browser instantly turns the file into a working web application.

This was probably the biggest surprise for me.

In practice, each of these tools could be saved as its own HTML file and used independently. However, for the purpose of this article, I combined all seven tools into a single dashboard so readers can view them together and better understand what can be created with ChatGPT, HTML, and a simple text editor.

1. Digital Clock

The first project was a digital clock.

It updates every second and can be used as a desk clock, screensaver, or second-monitor display.

It isn’t revolutionary.

But it demonstrates how quickly a useful tool can be created.

2. Countdown Timer

Next, I created a countdown timer.

Simply choose a future date and the application calculates how many days remain.

This could be useful for:

  • Vacations
  • Exams
  • Product launches
  • Project deadlines

3. To-Do List

A simple task manager was one of the most practical examples.

Add tasks.

Mark them complete.

Delete finished items.

The entire application was generated from a short prompt.

4. Habit Tracker

Many people want to build better habits.

Exercise.

Reading.

Learning a language.

The habit tracker provides a simple visual way to stay consistent.

5. Pomodoro Timer

The Pomodoro Technique remains one of the most popular productivity methods.

25 minutes of focused work.

5 minutes of rest.

A simple timer is often all that’s needed.

6. Expense Tracker

Instead of using a complicated finance application, I created a lightweight expense tracker.

It records spending and automatically calculates totals.

Simple.

Fast.

Effective.

7. Quote Generator

The final example was a random quote generator.

Click a button.

Receive a motivational quote.

It’s a small project, but it demonstrates how interactive web applications can be created with very little effort.

What Surprised Me Most

The most surprising part wasn’t the code.

It was how little software was required.

I didn’t install a programming environment.

I didn’t purchase a development tool.

I didn’t even use a code editor.

Everything started with a plain text file and a browser.

A few years ago, creating even a simple web application felt intimidating.

Today, the process feels dramatically more accessible.

Is ChatGPT Replacing Developers?

Not at all.

Professional software development still requires expertise, experience, and technical knowledge.

However, ChatGPT lowers the barrier for creating simple tools and prototypes.

For personal projects, experiments, and small productivity tools, that’s incredibly valuable.

Why This Matters

The most important lesson isn’t about HTML.

It’s about accessibility.

Many people have ideas for useful tools but never build them because they assume software development is too complicated.

Today, that assumption is becoming less true.

If you can describe what you want, AI can help you take the first step.

Final Thoughts

I didn’t become a developer overnight.

But I did learn that creating simple software is much more approachable than I once believed.

A text editor.

A browser.

A prompt.

That’s often enough to get started.

And for many people, that’s the most exciting part of all.
