I Finally Tried Runway AI. Here’s What I Really Thought.

My Honest First Impression After Using AI Video Generation for the First Time

When ChatGPT became popular, I remember thinking the same thing as everyone else.

“This changes writing.”

Later, I tried image generators.

Then I tried AI music tools like Suno.

Each one felt like another step forward.

But video always felt different.

Creating videos seemed like something that required expensive software, powerful computers, and years of editing experience.

Because of that, I kept putting off trying Runway.

Eventually, curiosity won.

I created an account, opened the website, and decided to stop watching YouTube reviews and experience it for myself.

The First Thing That Surprised Me

Honestly…

I expected to feel overwhelmed.

Whenever I try new creative software, I usually spend the first ten minutes wondering where to click.

Runway wasn’t like that.

The interface looked modern, but it didn’t feel intimidating.

Within a few minutes I already had my first project open.

That gave me confidence before I had even generated anything.

I Thought It Would Create a Perfect Video

This was probably my biggest misconception.

I imagined typing one sentence…

waiting a few seconds…

and receiving something that looked like a finished commercial.

That isn’t what happened.

The first result looked more like a visual concept than a polished advertisement.

Some movements were slightly unnatural.

A few details changed unexpectedly.

At first I felt slightly disappointed.

Then I realized I had completely unrealistic expectations.

What Changed My Mind

Instead of asking,

“Is this better than professional video editing?”

I started asking a different question.

“Could I have created this at all a few years ago?”

The answer was obvious.

No.

Not without learning editing software.

Not without spending hours.

Not without a much larger budget.

That completely changed how I looked at the result.

Runway Doesn’t Replace Creativity

One thing became very clear after a few generations.

Runway isn’t doing the creative thinking for you.

It still needs direction.

Good prompts usually create better videos.

Bad prompts create confusing results.

In other words…

The AI creates the video.

You still create the idea.

I actually like that balance.

The Moment I Started Having Fun

The most enjoyable part wasn’t watching the finished video.

It was experimenting.

Changing one sentence.

Adding another detail.

Trying different styles.

Each generation felt like another creative experiment.

I stopped trying to make the “perfect” video.

Instead, I became curious about what the AI would do next.

That was much more enjoyable.

Is It Perfect?

Definitely not.

Sometimes characters change.

Sometimes objects disappear.

Sometimes the motion feels strange.

The free credits also disappear faster than I expected.

Those limitations are real.

But honestly…

None of them stopped me from wanting to try again.

Who Is Runway Really For?

Before using it, I thought Runway was built for filmmakers.

Now I think it’s much broader than that.

Bloggers.

Content creators.

Marketers.

Small business owners.

Even people who simply enjoy experimenting with AI.

You don’t need to become a video editor.

You just need an idea worth exploring.

My Biggest Takeaway

I didn’t leave Runway thinking,

“AI will replace video editors.”

I left thinking,

“More people will start creating videos because tools like this exist.”

That’s a very different idea.

And honestly…

I think that’s the more exciting one.

Final Thoughts

This isn’t the best AI tool I’ve ever used.

It also isn’t the easiest.

But it’s one of the few AI tools that genuinely changed how I think about creating content.

Will I use it every day?

Probably not.

Will I keep experimenting with it?

Absolutely.

Because after trying Runway once, it became much easier to imagine where AI video generation might go next.
